Israeli bill could threaten future peace deals

Israel's hard-line assembly was expected to endorse a bill on Monday that could sink future calm deals with the Palestinians and Syria.

With Mideast appeasing already at a standstill, the proposed legislation would make it much harder for the government to cede doubtful east Jerusalem and the Golan Heights — capture territories that would be central to any prospect accord.

If it is passed, the new law would necessitate 80 of 120 lawmakers to approve any withdrawal from those two areas. Without that super preponderance, the administration would need to win support in a binding countrywide referendum.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cupboard supports the bill.

Comatose ex-Israeli PM moved home from hospital

Israel's exhausted former Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, was moved home to his ranch Friday, almost five years after being debilitated by a series of strokes while still in office.

Medical teams took the previous leader, who has been in a coma since early 2006 and is attached to a breathing apparatus, from his room in the long-term care unit of a hospital exterior Tel Aviv at dawn Friday. Security crews erect screens so he would not be visible when he was wheel out of the building and into a to come ambulance.

As of the hospital, security guard in SUVs escorts the ambulance to Sharon's family ranch in southern Israel.

Palestinian kills 4 Israelis on eve of peace talks

A Palestinian gunman opened fire on an Israeli means of transportation traveling in the West Bank on Tuesday, murder four passengers, establishment said, in a lethal assault that cast a long shadow over Mideast calm talks set to start this week.

There was no instant claim of responsibility. Other than in the past, confrontational groups have theatrical attacks in an effort to sabotage peace efforts.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the gunman opened fire at a vehicle traveling near Hebron — a unstable city that has been a flash point of violence in the past. Some 500 ultranationalist Jewish settlers live in heavily carrying weapons enclaves in the city amid more than 100,000 Palestinians.

Israel's nationwide save service said the victims included two men and two women. It gave no further details.
