Japan nuke plants ordered to beef up readiness

Reverberations jolted Japan on Saturday hours after the country's nuclear security agency prepared plant operators to beef up their earthquake-preparedness systems to put off a reappearance of the nuclear crisis roiling the county north of Tokyo.

There were no preliminary reports of damage from the magnitude-5.9 reverberations, and there was no risk of a tsunami similar to the one last month that crippled the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, causing Japan's worst-ever nuclear plant blow. Japan has been hit by a string of slighter quake since the scale 9.0 earthquake hit the country on March 11.

Japan prepares to restart work at nuclear plant

Japan prearranged urgent situation workers to withdraw from its suffering nuclear complex Wednesday amid a surge in emission, for the time being suspending efforts to cool the overheating reactors. Hours later, officials said they were preparing to send the team back in.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the workers, who had been drenching the reactors with salt water in a frantic effort to stabilize their temperature, had no choice but to pull back from the most hazardous areas.

"The workers cannot carry out even smallest work at the plant now," he said Wednesday morning, as smoke swelled above the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear intricate. "Because of the radiation risk we are on understudy."

US, Asian allies urge China to rein in NKorea

The United States, South Korea and Japan on Monday all urged China to assist rein in its ally North Korea and vowed harmony in defensive Seoul from any additional attacks from the North.

Though, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her counterpart Kim Sung-Hwan of South Korea and Seiji Maehara of Japan, who met in Washington, were indistinct about how they would deal with North Korea's "belligerent" actions.

The three-way meeting comes after North Korea shelled a South Korean margin island on November 23, killing two marines and two civilians, and following it revealed a uranium enhancement program that worried US scientists.

Kim, the South Korean foreign minister who spoke through an predictor, said the three shared the view that the Stalinist state in Pyongyang would face "severe consequences" if it engage in further provocation.
