4 NATO troops, Afghan policemen die in Afghanistan

Three explosions in a minute apart rocked Kandahar on Monday night, four Afghan police killed officers in the nation's main city in the south.

Three NATO service associates also were killed by bombings in southern Afghanistan and an insurgent attack killed one more in the east, raising the coalition's death toll to 11 in the first four days of October. Their nationalities and particulars of their deaths were not disclosed.

A lecturer for the regional governor of Kandahar, Zelmai Ayubi, said two policemen were killed and 10 other people were injured in the explosions, which happened near a school. Officials at Mirwais Hospital reported a higher death toll. They said four policemen died in the explosion and 17 other people were wounded.

Suicide car bomb kills five kids in south Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – A suicide car bomber blew himself up next to a police truck bringing a southern Afghan official to work early Monday, killing 5 children nearby, officials said.

The blast struck about 9 a.m. local time near a market area, said Ahmadullah Nazak, the chief of Kandahar province's Dand district.

"I dropped down. Then I heard a second explosion," Ahmadullah Nazak said. "It hit our car, but it didn't injure me." 5 children who were near the site of the blast were killed, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

A bodyguard who was driving with Ahmadullah Nazak was wounded, he said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though it fits the pattern of Taliban attacks targeting government officials in the south. As additional U.S. forces have poured into southern Taliban strongholds in Kandahar and Helmand provinces, Taliban insurgents have mounted a counter-campaign of bombings and assassinations aimed at those affiliated with the Afghan government.

US military build-up in Kandahar will bolster Taliban, warns security monitor

The US military build-up in Kandahar is likely to further make stronger the hold of the Taliban over the vital southern Afghanistan city, a highly respected security organization said today in a bleak report warning of record Taliban violence and rising civilian deaths across the country.

The account by the Afghanistan NGO Security Office, which monitors trends in aggression on behalf of aid organizations, said Nato's counter-insurgency strategy was not showing any signs of succeeding amid rising violence, the unchecked establishment of local militias and a huge increase in attacks on private development workers across the country.It exposed that June marked a record for Taliban attacks – up 51% on the previous year to 1,319 operations.
