Olympics or not, Team USA on mission starting this week in Las Vegas

LeBron James and NBA player power

As someone who grew up in the Cleveland, Ohio, I understand the anger of the Cleveland fans over the decision of the city's superstar basketball player, LeBron James, to leave Ohio in order to join the Miami Heat. Cleveland's great institutions the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Cleveland Clinic evoke pride but not much joy. Pro-sports are what that makes the news and unite Clevelanders.

When I was in junior high school, students were allowed to skip the classes and go to the opening day baseball game of the Cleveland Indians. All we had to do was to show our teacher that our parents had bought us a ticket. Supporting the team, like paying local sales taxes, was looked on to as a civic duty.

What is hard to understand in the case of the LeBron James is the rage of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert. "As you now know, that our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier," Gilbert wrote in an open letter to Cleveland fans. "This shocking act of the disloyalty from our home grown 'chosen one' sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn."

LeBron James Decides to Play for Miami Heat

Lebron James, the NBA's reigning two-time MVP, ended months of the speculation and suspense by telling the world Thursday he will play for the Miami Heat next season, leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers after an unsuccessful seven-year quest for the championship he covets.

James wasted no time in making a prediction during his exclusive announcement : "We're going to be a real good team."

It's a huge victory for the Heat, who got commitments from the superstars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on Wednesday.

That duo, along with James, formed the upper echelon of the most-celebrated free-agent period in the league history.

Heat president Pat Riley landed them all, a three-pack of the stars to help shape his quest for a dynasty in Miami.

He said he decided on Thursday morning about where he would play.

"It was day-to-day," he said. "This morning work up and had a great conversation with my mom and I was set."

The number one decision maker was being able to help his team win, he said.

"I don't have any doubts about this decision," he said.

Lakers Beat Celtics for Championship 83-79
