Officials: Bin Laden eyed small cities as targets

US: NYC subway bomb plot linked to British cell

WASHINGTON – A failed plot to set off bombs in the New York subway system last year was part of the larger al-Qaida terrorist conspiracy that planned a similar attack in England, U.S. prosecutors said Wednesday.

In an indictment unsealed Wednesday, prosecutors added with several al-Qaida figures to the case, including Adnan Shukrijumah, an FBI most-wanted terrorist.

Shukrijumah, one of the al-Qaida leaders in charge of the plotting attacks worldwide, was directly involved in recruiting and plotting the New York attack, prosecutors said. Attorney General Eric Holder has called that plot one of the most dangerous since 9/11.

Two of the men indicted Wednesday — Abid Naseer and Tariq Ur Rehman — were linked to a previously undisclosed companion plot in England.

These charges underscore the global nature of the terrorist threat we face," said David Kris, the Justice Department's has top national security prosecutor.

Three U.S. citizens were arrested in the September 2009 before, prosecutors said, they could carry out a trio of suicide bombings in Manhattan. Najibullah Zazi and Zarein Ahmedzay have pleaded guilty and admitted planning to detonate homemade bombs on the subway during rush hour.

A third man, Adis Medunjanin, awaits trial. Prosecutors added new terrorism charges against him Wednesday.

Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor Indicted on Rape Charges

NEW YORK -- Pro football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor was indicted on Wednesday by a suburban New York grand jury on charges of third-degree rape and patronizing a prostitute.

The indictment follows his May 6 arrest at a Holiday Inn in Ramapo, New York, where the prosecutors say he paid a 16-year-old girl $300 to have sex with him.

Taylor had been charged previously in Ramapo Town Court, but the indictment transfers the case to Rockland County. He is scheduled to appear July 13.

NY bomb plotter Faisal indicted on 10 counts

New York: The man who suspected of trying to set off a car bomb in New York's Times Square on May 1 was indicted by a federal grand jury on Thursday on terrorism-related charges.

Pakistani-born Faisal Shahzad, who became a US citizen last year, and was indicted on 10 charges, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted terrorism transcending national borders.

He faces life in prison if convicted and has been cooperating with the authorities since he was arrested, officials said.

"(The) 10-count indictment returned in the Southern District of New York charges Faisal Shahzad with conspiring with the Pakistani Taliban to wreak death and the destruction in Times Square," US Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

New York Man Freed After 16 Years in Prison

NEW YORK -- A man who has spent 16 years in prison on a New York City murder conviction has been freed after the Brooklyn district attorney's office conceded the case had been mishandled and should be thrown out.

Kevin Richardson, an executive assistant district attorney, said that the office had not learned until May that the key witness who incriminated Jabbar Collins in the 1994 murder of landlord Abraham Pollack had recanted before the trial. Richardson said the office could not retry the case because the witness has since died and physical evidence has been destroyed.

A federal judge Tuesday called the handling of the case "shameful" and vacated the conviction.

Collins was freed Wednesday. He said he wants to go to law school and defend people without legal representation.

Officials: N.Y. bomb suspect got Taliban support

NEW YORK (AP) — Two federal law enforcement officials say that the Times Square bomb suspect claimed he received financial support from the Pakistani Taliban for his failed one-man terror operation.

The officials close to the probe tell The Associated Press they believe money for Faisal Shahzad's plans was channeled through an underground money network known as "hawala."

But the officials say the people suspected of providing Shahzad money in the U.S. — including three people detained in Massachusetts and Maine — did not know what the money would be used for.

The officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the investigation is not yet completed.
