Yemen: Al-Qaida's al-Awlaki killed in airstrike

The Yemeni government has released an executive statement saying the U.S.-born al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed.

The government says al-Awlaki was embattled and killed 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the town of Khashef in the Province of al-Jawf the town is located 87 miles (140 kilometers) east of the capital Sanaa the statement says the act was launched on Friday around 9:55 a.m. It gave no other details.

If the death is confirmed, al-Awlaki would be the nearly everyone prominent al-Qaida figure to be killed since Osama bin Laden's death in a U.S. raid in Pakistan in May.

Gunmen Kidnap 2 Americans in Yemen

Yemeni officials say tribal gunmen have kidnapped two of the American tourists and are demanding the release of a jailed tribesman for the pair.

SAN'A, Yemen -- Tribal gunmen kidnapped two American tourists in Yemen on Monday and they are demanding the release of a jailed tribesman for the pair, security officials said.

The U.S. Embassy in San'a said it was working with Yemeni authorities to resolve the situation.

The security officials, a taxi driver and tribesmen said the two -- a man and a woman -- were seized while traveling in al-Hudaydah province west of the capital San'a.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Taxi driver Mohammed Saleh, who was driving the two, said six gunmen stopped them on the road and took them to the al-Hamra village. Al-Sharda tribesmen said the hostages were now "guests" in the village.
