Bomb strikes funeral, killing 48 in Baghdad

A car bomb blow up exterior a funeral tent Thursday in a mostly Shiite area of Baghdad, killing at least 48 people — the newest in a wave of attacks that has trigger fury over the government's incapacity to stop the carnage.

Amid massive security, Egypt's Christians gripe peacefully

Hundreds of followers of Egyptian Christians protesting a New Year's bombing that killed nearly two dozen of their members marched Tuesday night on a church in a Cairo suburb, where they were met by an equivalent number of security officers in riot gear.

For the first night since the car bomb, which detonated in face of a Coptic church in Alexandria, there were no reports of aggression during the protests.

The car bombing death toll rose to 23, Egypt's state news agency MENA reported Tuesday.

Christians and Muslim group in the Shubra neighborhood of Cairo shouted their outrage over the Alexandria attack on Coptic Christians.

"With my blood and my soul I will defend the cross," chanted crowds of protesters, as they wended their way downward Shubra Street toward a church. Some carried crosses -- up to 4 feet (1.22 meters) long -- inscribed with messages of protest written in red ink to stand for blood. Some protesters lay downward on the street, prostrating themselves in the shape of a cross.

Still-defiant Times Sq. bomber gets life sentence

A Pakistani settler who tried to set off a car bomb in Times Square was sentence Tuesday to life in prison by a moderator who said she hopes he expend time behind bars thinking "cautiously about whether the Quran wants you to kill lots of people."

A disobedient Faisal Shahzad smirked as he was given a obligatory life term that, under federal sentencing rules, will keep him at the back bars until he dies.

"If I'm given 1,000 lives I will give up them all for the life of Allah," he said at the start of a report that lasted several minutes. "How can I be judged by a court that does not understand the anguish of my people?"

7 Killed During Explosions at Nigerian Independence Celebrations

Confrontational from Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta set off more than a few small bombs in the capital during ceremonies marking the 50th anniversary of independence. Police in Nigeria say at least seven people have been killed and more than a few others upset.

Two car bombs went off in Abuja and there was also a smaller bang nearer the procession grounds -- all claimed by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta which issued a declaration saying there is nothing value celebrating after 50 years of failure.

The bang did not disrupt the independence ceremony where President Goodluck Jonathan said that on this day in 1960 the new citizens of a new country were full of hope.
