Russia, Qatar take World Cup to new lands

FIFA gave its ultimate credit to up-and-coming markets on Thursday when they awarded the 2018 and 2022 editions of the prestigious and profitable World Cup soccer finals to Russia and Qatar.

Russia won the accurate to put on the 2018 World Cup, the first time it will have been theatrical in Eastern Europe after 10 editions in the western half of the continent.

Qatar will stage the 2022 finals, a first equally for the Middle East and for an Arab country. It will also be the minimum nation ever to host the World Cup with a populace of less than a million.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who proclaims the winners after a vote of his administrative commission in the Swiss financial capital, said: "We go to new lands.

McCain calls study on gays in military flawed

Straight challenging the Pentagon's top management, Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain on Thursday affronted a military study on gays as faulty and said letting gays serve openly would be hazardous in a time of war.

McCain's antagonism foreshadows the future Senate debate on a bill that would knock over the 1993 "don't ask, don't tell" law, which bans gays from portion openly in the overhaul.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has promised a vote, but McCain has helped to block preceding debate on the Senate floor.

Additional dimming chances of repeal this month was a recent conformity amongst Senate Republicans not to vote on any bill earlier than addressing tax cuts and government spending.

US embassy cables: 'Reviewing our Afghanistan-Pakistan strategy'

A number of teams of US Special Forces soldiers have been clandestinely fixed with Pakistani military forces in the ethnic belt, helping to hunt down Taliban and al-Qaida armed forces and co-ordinate drone strikes, the embassy cable reveal.

The numbers concerned are small – just 16 soldiers in October 2009 – but the deployment is of enormous political significance, described in a cable that provides an extraordinary glimpse into underground American operations in the world's most violent al-Qaida hotbed.

The first American Special Forces group of four soldiers was deployed to an old British colonial fort in the northern half of the tribal belt in September 2009, helping Frontier Corps paramilitaries to carry out armaments strikes on a rebellious base.
