Wonderful huge crustacean: deepest ocean

A huge crustacean has been found lurking 7km down in the waters off the coast of New Zealand. Amphipods have been found alive in large numbers at the very base of ocean trenches, deep, thinny valleys in the sea floor that can plunge down to nearly 11km. The creature called a supergiant is a type of amphipod, which are normally around 2-3cm long.

The creatures are small, but enormously active, and seem to thrive in this place where the pressure is one thousand times greater than at sea level. Alan Jamieson, from the University of Aberdeen's Ocean lab, said: It's a bit like finding a foot-long cockroach.

Innovative aspect: Mona Lisa copy

A painting thought to be the earliest copy of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa has been discovered at Madrid's Prado Museum. The original painting, which presently hangs at the Louvre in Paris, is obscured by several layers of old, cracked varnish. The picture is thought to have been formed by one of Leonardo's students at the side of the 16th century original.

As the replica remained hidden for so long under the over paint, experts had believed it was painted long after Leonardo's death. The artwork features the same female figure, but had been covered over with black paint and varnish. According to Martin Bailey, who reported on the discovery for the paper, "In fact, the new you see Lisa's eyes, which are quite enticing, and her enigmatic smile. UK broadband speeds: Ofcom reports

According to Ofcom reports the UK's average home download speed is on the rise, but it could be still faster if more users upgraded at minimal rate. Ofcom noted that the price difference between many of the so called super fast services and current generation connections was comparatively little.

The news site thinkbroadband.com said the research also highlighted the need for investment in out-of-town connections. Upgrades offered by Virgin Media and BT helped boost the figure. The opinion of regulator is that November's average broadband speed was 7.6 megabits per second, up from 6.8Mbps in May. The other thing s that it is the first report since internet service providers were told they would only be able to claim a maximum speed if it was available to 10% of their customers.
