US Approves Truvada: HIV-prevention medicine

Truvada, the HIV prevention drug approved by US health regulators. The opinion of the Food and Drug Administration is that Truvada can be used by persons at high risk of disease and anyone who may hold in sexual activity with HIV-infected partners. There have been concerns the circulation of such a drug could engender a false sense of security. Present have also been worries that a drug-resistant strain of HIV could expand.

Studies since 2010 showed that Truvada reduced the risk of HIV in healthy gay men and among HIV-negative heterosexual partners of HIV-positive people by between 44% and 73%. A number of health workers and groups active in the HIV society opposed a green light for the once-daily pill. Truvada, made by California-based Gilead Sciences, is previously backed by the FDA to be in use with existing anti-retroviral drugs for people who contain HIV.

An Innovative Light trick to see around corners

Scientists have found a new method to get images through scattering materials such as ice-covered glass or even skin, or still see around corners. A lot of investigate in recent years has focused on correcting for dispersion, mostly for medical applications. In 2010, a camera that can see around corners garnered much awareness, using a series of timed laser pulses to light up a scene and functioning what is around a corner from the timing of the reflections.

 SLMs modify what is recognized as the phase of an incoming light ray. Like a sequence of waves on the ocean that run over rocks or surfers, the waves in beam can be slowed down or redirected when they hit dispersion materials. The prototype device was just one of a huge many study efforts trying to break the difficulty of scattering.  The panel then realized that the similar approach can work in reflection, not passing through a scattering material but bouncing off of it, such as the case of light bouncing off a wall at a corner.

Rejoined EPEAT green registry: Apple

Apple has rejoined an environmental ratings scheme a week after quitting the programme. The u-turn follows a statement by San Francisco city officials that they intended to ban local agencies from buying Apple Mac computers. A senior vice president published a letter published on Apple's site by it’s of hardware engineering said the move to stop the registry had been an error.

Also noted the authority had a policy of only buying EPEAT-registered electronics where proper. iPads and iPhones would not have been affected as they are not covered by the plan. Apple helped set up the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool registry in 2006. It is designed to recognize which electronic devices pose the least risk to the environment.
