Police have captured a convicted murderer who runaway from a central North Island prison on Thursday afternoon.
Christopher Thomas Watkins was captured at about 10.40pm by the Turangi Police.
He was approached by police on the side of the road whilst walking along of SH 1, approx three kilometres south of Turangi and taken into custody.
Watkins, when apprehended, succumbed to police without fight.
Staff at Tongariro Rangipo Prison south unit earlier noticed Watkins was missing about 1pm, acting senior sergeant Neale Saunders of Turangi police said.
Watkins is serving a life sentence for a 1988 murder.
