Formula One Coming to Austin, Texas

New Yorkers wanted it, a city in New Jersey was rumored to be on the short list, but Austin, Texas will be the site for the 2012 U.S. Formula One Grand Prix, according to the website of F1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone.

Take that, Super Bowl selection committee!

Speed.com reports that the prestigious event will take place at the purpose-built facility, and promoted locally with Full Throttle Productions, a company with ties to the popular NASCAR racing series. In a statement, the company’s managing partner, Tavo Hellmund, wrote that “few cities if any on America could rival the connectivity of all the key elements needed for hosting an F1 event as well as Austin. Now, many people around the world will have the opportunity to experience a world-class event, facility and city.”

The agreement calls for the race to take place in Austin each year through 2021. The 2012 event will be the first Formula One race held on U.S. soil since the 2007 U.S. Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It will mark the second time that the series has visited Texas, having taken part in a street race in Dallas in 1984

Vijay Singh out of top 50 for 1st time since 1992

LONDON – The world golf ranking doesn’t have Vijay Singh among the top 50 for the 1st time in nearly 18 years.
Vijay Singh slipped to No. 51 in the world ranking published Monday after he failed to qualify for the final 36 holes at the Texas Open. It was his 5th consecutive tournament without earning ranking points.

The last time Vijay Singh was ranked out of the top 50 was August 16, 1992. He won the German Open the next week and has been in the top 50 every week since. Vijay Singh is the only other player besides Tiger Woods to be No. 1 in the world during the last decade, reaching the top for the first time in 2004.

The timing could not have been worse. Vijay Singh has 1 week to get back into the top 50 or he will have to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Ailing Andy Roddick withdraws from Madrid

MADRID (AFP) - American Andy Roddick will head into Roland Garros with only 1 or 2 clay matches to hand after withdrawing from the Madrid Masters on Wednesday with a stomach virus.

The 5th seed was unable to take to the court against intended opening opponent Feliciano Lopez of Spain after fighting the illness for the past several days.

Andy Roddick last played in Miami in April, winning that hardcourt event, and has spent 3 weeks training on clay in the US. With his health status still unsure, the former No 1 is uncertain when and where he will get any warm-up for the French Open, which begins a week from Sunday.

"I would have taken this virus any time over the past 5 weeks, but unfortunately I have it now,'' he said.

Andy Roddick said he was unlikely to be able to commit to the World Team Championship in Duesseldorf, Germany where the United States is entered in the eight-nation field.

Jamie Moyer threw 105 pitches in front of a sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park, striking out 5 Braves en route to improving his season record to 4-2.
