Considered an Ivy League school in the U.S., Brown University in Providence Rhode Island, is the seventh oldest U.S. higher organization and was founded in 1764 while the country was still a colony of the British.
Achebe’s appointment was definite by Ruth J. Simmons and Dr. Tricia Rose, respectively the university’s president and the chairman of Africana department, in a statement circulated at the weekend in the U.S.
"I am very pleased to be associated with Achebe's work,” Simmons said in the statement.
In his reaction to the appointment, Achebe told Nigerian newspaper, The Guardian that "President Ruth Simmons has provided an unusual opportunity for me to continue my life's work at one of the world's greatest institutions, the Brown University."
