Corruption investigators are to press for illegal charges over BAE Systems' arms deals, setting the stage for a showdown in Britain's most politically-charged corporate fraud case.
The Serious Fraud Office said on Thursday it was looking for consent to prosecute from Baroness Scotland, attorney-general, after the failure of efforts to convince the British company to accept a confidence and fine running into hundreds of millions of pounds.
The decision throws a hugely contentious case back into the political arena and threatens BAE with big financial penalties and the prospect of being barred from request for lucrative international public works contracts.
The SFO's two line statement said it was preparing papers for the attorney-general relating to a prosecution of BAE for overseas bribery. The charges were linked to an inquiry into the company's dealings in Africa and eastern Europe.
