Local authorities across the UK should have a statutory duty to combat climate change, government advisors recommend. Report says that some council is taking action but many others are not, which threatens national climate goals. The committee calculates that having all councils spend in these events will bring UK emissions down by about 15 million tons of carbon dioxide per year, or about 3%.
The committee has cut its own power use by almost a third. It has invested in storm turbines, biomass boilers and solar panels for schools, and insulated 30,000 homes. The LGA agrees that local establishment can and should be major players in combating climate change, but argues that a generally forced statutory duty is a blunt appliance. The commission has had no response as yet from government, which is however indebted to consider its recommendations.
