From the country's scientists, the practice of dumping millions of tonnes of waste rock in deep Norwegian fjords is coming under close scrutiny. The Norwegian Institute for Water Research is raising a sequence of studies to assess the consequences. The three-year project being run by Nave will try to describe those impacts more fully, but also look at strategies for containment and recovery of the deposits.
The mining industry is an important sector for the Norwegian economy, employing some 22,000 people. Prof Sweet man meticulous the study plan through a session at the assembly devoted to deep sea protection imperatives in the 21st Century. There's deep-water fishing and the most severe effects of that would be bottom-trawling, which is widespread in certain parts of the world.
