US research suggests that women who get certain ulcer drugs have a small increased risk of hip fractures in later life, mainly if they smoke. Women should not be put off by means of proton pump inhibitors if they are needed, but these results present yet another reason not to smoke.
The researchers found that smokers or ex-smokers captivating proton pump inhibitors had a 50% increased risk of hip fracture compared with women not taking the prescription. The great study confirms that suspicion. Though, the complete risk is small, with the drugs causing an additional five hip fractures per 10,000 women per year. The research tracked almost 80,000 nurses in the US aged between 30 and 55.
