AP sources: Emanuel leaving White House on Friday

Rahm Emanuel will leave your job as White House chief of staff on Friday and will begin his campaign for Chicago mayor by gathering with voters in the city on Monday, two people recognizable with Emanuel's plans said.

Gunman wounds 2 officers at Neb. hospital; is shot

A gunman open fire at an Omaha hospital Wednesday morning, wounding two law enforcement officers who also shot him, establishment said.

Omaha police have not revealed many details about the shootings at Creighton University Medical Center, counting the suspect's identity or the succession of events. Police Lt. Darci Tierney said the believe was in "very critical condition" at the hospital Wednesday afternoon. The two officers endured minor wounds.

The shooting happened inside the hospital, which are a few blocks north of the city's downtown. Police spokesman Jacob Bettin refused to say where in the building the shooting occurred, but Omaha television station KETV reported that eyewitnesses said it happened in or near the canteen.

Mexico: Mudslide proves less deadly than feared

OAXACA, Mexico – A huge mudslide first thought to have buried hundreds of people has left only 11 missing and there are no confirmed dead, authorities said Tuesday night, backing off earlier predictions of a catastrophe in Mexico's rain-soaked southern state of Oaxaca.

Federal Interior Minister Francisco Blake and Oaxaca Gov. Ulises Ruiz both confirmed the drastically reduced toll from the slide that hit the town of Santa Maria de Tlahuitoltepec early Tuesday.

"So far no one is confirmed dead, only 11 missing who we hope ... will be found," Ruiz told The Associated Press.

Initial reports from Santa Maria de Tlahuitoltepec, a rural mountain town 373 miles (600 kilometers) southeast of Mexico City, said a hillside collapsed on hundreds of sleeping residents after several days of heavy rains in the aftermath of a hurricane and tropical storm that hit Mexico and Central America.

Attacks kill 3 Iraqi police

BAGHDAD – Officials say three police officers have been killed in late night attacks in 2 northern Iraqi cities, including a bombing that also injured 8 bystanders.

Police said a car bomb exploded Tuesday night near a popular cafe in Tarmiyah. A hospital official said the blast killed 2 police officers and 8 cafe customers.

Later, officials said attackers broke in the home of a policeman in the former insurgent stronghold of Samarra and killed him. A health worker confirmed the death.

Attacks on Iraqi security forces have stepped up in recent months as the U.S. military begins to withdraw from the country.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Segway owner dies after falling off river cliff

LONDON – All police found at the bottom of a cliff was a man's body in a frigid river and a Segway, the 2-wheeled electric device that was supposed to revolutionize personal transport.

It was Jimi Heselden, a one-time laid-off coal miner turned self-made millionaire who had bought the Segway company only 10 months earlier. He apparently fell to his death while riding one of the sleek black-and-silver scooters. Authorities said Monday his body was found in the River Wharfe at the base of a 30-foot cliff.

Details remained sketchy — police say only that the death was not suspicious, meaning foul play is not suspected — but the incident seems certain to raise fresh questions about the safety of the Segway, which is banned on British motorways and in some U.S. cities because of safety concerns.

A witness reported seeing a man fall Sunday over a 30-foot drop into the river near the village of Boston Spa, 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of London. The remote, heavily forested area, not far from Heselden's country estate, is popular with hikers.

'Titanic' co-star Gloria Stuart dies at 100

LOS ANGELES – Gloria Stuart, the 1930s Hollywood beauty who gave up acting for 30 years and later became the oldest Academy Award acting nominee as the spunky survivor in "Titanic," has died. She was 100.

Gloria Stuart died of respiratory failure Sunday night at her Los Angeles home, her daughter, Sylvia Thompson, said Monday. The actress had been diagnosed with lung cancer 5 years ago and had beaten breast cancer about 20 years ago, Thompson said.

"She did not believe in illness. She paid no attention to it, and it served her well," Thompson said. "She had a great life. I'm not sad. I'm happy for her."

In her youth, Stuart was a blond beauty who starred in B pictures as well as some higher-profile ones such as "The Invisible Man," Busby Berkeley's "Gold Diggers of 1935" and two Shirley Temple movies, "Poor Little Rich Girl" and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm." But by the mid-1940s she had retired.

Georgia executes inmate who had attempted suicide

JACKSON, Ga. – A Georgia prisoner who tried to kill himself last week by slashing his arms and throat with a razor blade was executed Monday night amid heightened security for the 1998 murders of a trucking company owner and his 2 children.

Brandon Joseph Rhode, 31, was put to death by injection at the state prison in Jackson. He was pronounced dead at 10:16 p.m. Rhode declined to speak any last words or have a final prayer.

He was convicted in 2000 of killing Steven Moss, 37, his 11-year-old son Bryan and 15-year-old daughter Kristin during a burglary of their Jones County home in central Georgia. His coconspirator, Daniel Lucas, was also sentenced to death in a separate trial and remains on death row.

Rhode's execution had been set for 7 p.m. but was pushed back several hours as corrections officials waited for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide on his plea for a stay of execution. The court rejected appeals later that night.

Eastern Afghan official killed in bombing

KABUL, Afghanistan – The deputy governor of a volatile eastern Afghan province was killed by a suicide car bomber Tuesday, along with 5 others, police said.

The explosion occurred when the official was driving in Ghazni city toward his office, said Ghazni province Police Chief Zarawar Zahid. The bomber rammed into one of the vehicles in the two-car convoy, sparking a large blast.

All of those in the convoy were killed, including Deputy Gov. Khazim Allayar, his adult son, his driver, and 3 bodyguards, Zahid said. 12 people nearby were wounded, he added.

Afghan government officials are prime targets for the Taliban and other insurgent groups that have instituted an assassination campaign against people who work with either the Afghan government or NATO forces.

Officials say levee failing near Wis. park

PORTAGE, Wis. – A levee along the Wisconsin River was failing Sunday, flooding the access road leading to a park area and cutting off any residents who did not heed daylong warnings to evacuate.

It wasn't clear how many of the roughly 300 residents remained in Blackhawk Park around 4 p.m. Sunday when the road was closed after water started leaking from the Caledonia Levee south of Highway 33. The levee had not collapsed, but officials said enough water was coming through it that it wasn't considered safe.

The Portage Daily Register reported that the water was about six inches deep on some roads Sunday afternoon, and people were wading, pushing strollers and riding bicycles through the water.

The Columbia County Emergency Management Office wasn't letting anybody in or out of Blackhawk Park and warned all morning that emergency vehicles, including police, fire and ambulances, would not be able to reach any residents who stayed behind.

NY judge gives 86 years in prison to Pakistani scientist who shot at US troops in Afghanistan

A U.S.-trained Pakistani scientist convicted of trying to kill U.S. agents and military officers in Afghanistan was sentenced Thursday to 86 years in prison after she delivered a message of world peace and forgave the judge.

"I’m a Muslim, but I love Americans too," Aafia Siddiqui said during one of several rambling statements delivered in a lilting voice at the behest of U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman.

"Forgive everybody in my case, please," she added. "Also forgive Judge Berman."

During a three-hour hearing in federal court in Manhattan, Siddiqui claimed she had evidence Israel was behind the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and warned more plots were in the works.

'50s pop singer Eddie Fisher dies at age 82

LOS ANGELES – Eddie Fisher, whose huge fame as a pop singer was overshadowed by scandals ending his marriages to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, has died. He was 82.

His daughter, Tricia Leigh Fisher of Los Angeles, told The Associated Press that Eddie Fisher died Wednesday night at his home in Berkeley of complications from hip surgery.

"Late last evening the world lost a true America icon," Fisher's family said in a statement released by publicist British Reece. "One of the greatest voices of the century passed away. He was an extraordinary talent and a true mensch."

1st woman in 5 years executed in US despite outcry

JARRATT, Va. – The first woman executed in the United States in 5 years was put to death in Virginia on Thursday for arranging the killings of her husband and a stepson over a $250,000 insurance payment.

Teresa Lewis, 41, died by injection at 9:13 p.m. Thursday, authorities said. She became the first woman executed in Virginia in nearly a century. Supporters and relatives of the victims watched her execution at Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt.

Indonesian ex-policeman claims Al-Qaeda link

JAKARTA (AFP) – An Indonesian police officer who quit the force to become a terrorist said Thursday he was affiliated to Al-Qaeda and had trained about 170 militants to wage jihad, or "holy war".

Mohammed Sofyan Tsauri, 34, made the confession to reporters as he appeared at a Jakarta court for the start of his trial on terrorism-related charges.

"I am affiliated with Al-Qaeda and in contact with Abu Sayyaf," he said, referring to Osama bin Laden's network and a Philippines-based Islamist militant outfit.

"I became a terrorist after I quit the police (in 2008)... What I have done isn't an act of terror, it's an obligatory religious activity ordered by God."
