Famed San Francisco Sea Lions Leave In Droves

Current news updates, World current news
2 mysteries surround a huge herd of sea lions that were hanging out on a pier in San Francisco Bay: Why did so many shows up and why did so many leave at once?

Just last month, Pier 39, famous in San Francisco for its sea lions also the throngs of tourists they attract, was groaning below the weight of more than 1,500 of the animals. The record number delighted tourists also baffled experts. Marine experts suspect the sea lions came and stayed for the food, then gone mostly for the same reason.

"Most likely, they left chasing a food source," said Mr. Jeff Boehm, executive director of the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, which runs an information center as well as gift shop at Pier 39. "It is probably what kept them here in the first place."

The animals start leaving in droves the day after Thanksgiving, almost as if someone had issued an order. But Jeff Boehm said the fact that so many sea lions stayed for so long is even stranger than their disappearance. "They do move off," Jeff Boehm said, adding that in the fall, older sea lions head to.

NASA says collision improbable, as Russia considers asteroid mission

Current news updates, World current news

However, the Russian space chief tells Golos Rossii radio that he is heard the asteroid is getting closer to a possible impact in about 22 years. He also adds that, "People's lives are at stake."

He says Russia's space agency will hold a meeting on the topic soon. He also says that, if an asteroid deflection mission is finalized, NASA would be amongst those invited to join.

JPL space telescope will get its 1st glimpse at the sky

Current news updates, World current news
For the 1st time since NASA's Wide-field Infrared Satellite Explorer (WISE) blasted off 2 weeks ago, the space telescope will be getting its first glimpse of the sky.

The highly-sensitive infrared telescope aboard WISE is housed in a cryostat filled with solid hydrogen that works like a thermos. Until Tuesday, this thermos had a wrap that protected it from heat from the Earth and the sun until the satellite can be launched into orbit and get its bearings.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory-managed mission has to stay extremely cool - just a few degrees over absolute zero - so that it may observe the heat coming from dim objects that may otherwise fade into the darkness of space - similar to asteroids, brown dwarfs and distant ultraluminous galaxies.

But WISE isn't being on the clock just yet. It will take another 2 weeks to get the space telescope ready to start taking images of the sky. Once it begins scientists on the mission expect it to map the whole sky in 6 months – that is a breakneck pace in astronomical terms.

Chilli pill cuts as many calories as 80 minutes walk

LONDON: Scientists claimed to have developed a slimming pill that can burn up as many calories as 80 minutes of walk or else a 25 minute jog, while you sit. The pill Capsiplex which is made from hot peppers and capsicum, utilizes the weight-loss potential of red-hot peppers.

Chilli and capsicum help accelerate the metabolism, thus, helping people lose weight more rapidly. But, consuming these chillies or their extract in large quantities causes irritation as these are terribly hot.

The scientists overcame this crisis while developing the capsule. The pill eats up the calories with no causing any irritation, the Daily Mail reported.

Trials of the pill conducted at University of Oklahoma in U.S. showed teenagers taking Capsiplex burned off 278 more calories before, in and after a bout of exercise than those on placebos.

The pill is previously in use in the U.S. Hollywood stars like Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt and Britney Spears are known to have used the pill.

Israel: First Jesus-era house found in Nazareth

Current news updates, World current newsNAZARETH, Israel- Days before Christmas, Israeli archaeologists say they have uncovered remains of the first dwelling in Nazareth that can be dated back to the time of Jesus.

They say the find sheds a new light on what Nazareth could have been like in Jesus' time - maybe a small hamlet with about 50 houses populated by poor Jews.

Archaeologist Yardena Alexandre of the Israel Antiquities Authority says remains of a wall, a hideout as well as a cistern were found after builders dug up an old convent courtyard in the northern Israeli city.

Yardena Alexandre told reporters on Monday that archeologists also found clay and chalk vessels used by Galilean Jews of the time - an indication the home belongs to a "simple Jewish family."

She also says that it is likely Jesus and his childhood friends would have known the house.

Philippines' Mayon Volcano to explode 'within days'

Current news updates, World current news
The warning comes after 1000s of people were evacuated from their homes in central Albay province. Reports said about 85 % of the area's populace were now living in emergency shelters. A no-go zone established around Mayon volcano has also been expanded to 6 miles from the base.

The Philippines' military was policing the danger zone to make sure no one was left behind and no one tries to return. Experts have raised the alert level to 4 - which means an explosion is expected within the next few days.

The country's chief vulcanologist, Renato Solidum, said above 450 volcanic tremors had been detected over a 12-hour period on Saturday. He added that rumbling sounds had been heard at the volcano's base.

"What we’re preparing for is a hazardous eruption and a quick descent of pyroclastic ashflow," Mr Solidum told reporters.Mayon has erupted 48 times in recorded history, with the previous happening in 2006.

Nobody was killed in the explosion, but ash that settled on the mountain turned to mud during a typhoon 3 months later. The resulting mudslide killed some 1,000 villagers.

All kids must read the Bible - federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says

Current news updates, World current newsBIBLE classes must be compulsory so children have a fundamental understanding of Christianity on leaving school, Tony Abbott says.

"I think each one should have some familiarity with the great texts that are at the core of our civilization," said Tony Abbott, the Federal Opposition leader. "That includes, most importantly, the Bible.” I think it would be impossible to have a good general education without at least some serious familiarity with the Bible and with the teachings of Christianity. "That doesn't mean that people have to be believers."

However ex- Howard government Islamic advisor Dr Ameer Ali, said Mr Abbott's remarks were "over the top". "It's one thing to say all children need a good knowledge of history and geography or science," Dr Ali said.

"But it’s something else to say all children should have knowledge of the Bible. That may hurt other people who have their own holy scriptures," he added. Australian Education Union's federal president, Angelo Gavrielatos, said that religion was not a priority for schools.

"There is a place for comparative studies of religion in the curriculum, but eventually we consider it a private matter for parents and their children," he added.

'Tree Man' says growths returning

Current news updates, World current newsThe Indonesian man known as 'Tree Man' is still combating the bark-like warts that cover his whole body. Dede Koswara underwent a surgery in August this year to remove the growths, which are believed to be an extreme case of the Human Papilloma Virus or HPV.

Surprising images of Koswara's body first emerged in 2007 - his hands and his feet was worst affected by the scaly warts. Doctors were puzzled by him but eventually pinpointed the problem - he has a rare genetic condition that prevents his body fighting HPV.

During surgery this year over 6 kilogram’s of warts were removed from his body, giving him a few chances at a normal life. Instead of being hampered by his unrecognizable 'tree' hands, he was able to hold small objects and even go fishing.

His mother still helps him to bathe and eat.” Those that were removed are growing yet again and started to reappear after I returned home," Dede Koswara said from his home in West Java.

While it seems Koswara will always suffer from the aggressive warts, doctors believe with 2 operations a year, he must enjoy a better quality of life.

Second dengue strain prompts health fears

Current news updates, World current news
Health authorities are very much concerned about the outbreak of a second strain of dengue fever in north Queensland. Queensland Health (QH) says the dengue fever strains one and three are now circulating in Townsville.

That is of great fear to doctors who say people who have had dengue fever before are at a greater risk of developing potentially fatal complications from a second dose. Until now, 11 people have tested positive to locally-acquired dengue in Townsville.

Queensland Health says tests now show nine of those are dengue one whereas the remaining two are dengue three. Test results from more potential dengue cases are supposed to be known today.

Work is continuing to found if the dengue three strains now circulating is the same as the one that led to an epidemic earlier this year.

Twitter briefly blocked by hackers

Current news updates, World current news
NEW YORK – Hackers briefly blocked access to the well-known Internet messaging service Twitter, steering traffic to another site where a group reportedly calling itself the "Iranian Cyber Army" claimed responsibility.

Users trying to reach Twitter early on Friday were redirected to a Web page that CNN reported had a picture of a green flag and a message that said, "This website has been hacked by the Iranian Cyber Army."

There was no evidence the hackers are actually linked to Iran. Web sites like Facebook and Twitter helped bring attention to the Iranian opposition in the country's crackdown after its June elections, with users posting minute-by-minute updates and amateur video.

Twitter later on Friday posted a message on its blog that said its Domain Name Systems' records "were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed." The site says it will update with more details "once we have investigated more fully."

RYAN GIGGS signed a fresh one-year contract with Manchester United.

Ryan Giggs
The Old Trafford legend's present deal was due to end in the summer but Sir Alex Ferguson has rewarded the midfielder for various outstanding performances this term. Giggs in recent times named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and joked he would bring the trophy with him into the contract negotiations.

However, there was little doubt the 36-year-old would extend his distinguished stay with his only club as he continues to impress with his form and fitness.

"I am delighted that I have agreed one more year," said Giggs. "I’ am enjoying my football more than ever and I’ am looking forward to hopefully winning more trophies with Manchester United."

Ferguson feels the evergreen veteran can go on playing until 2012. "Ryan Giggs deserves a new contract and I’ am sure that he will play for another two years," said Ferguson.

"His form is incredible at the moment and he is playing some of his best football."

Hackers steal South Korean-US military secrets

Current news updates, World current newsSEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korea’s military says a suspected cyber attack that netted top secret defense plans may have been carried out by North Korea.

As said by a Defense Ministry spokesman, the suspected hacking occurred late last month. He says a South Korean officer failed to remove a USB device when he switched a military computer from a restricted-access intranet to the Internet. The USB device is said to have contained an outline of plans for military operations by South Korean and U.S. troops in case of war on the Korean peninsula.

Defense Ministry spokesman Won Tae-jae said the stolen document was not a complete text of the operational plans, but an 11 page file used to brief military officials. He said it did not hold any critical information.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that Pyongyang may have used a Chinese IP address—the Web equivalent of a street address or phone number.

The most recent case comes months after hackers launched high-profile cyber attacks on prominent government-run sites in the U.S. and South Korea.
