In Pakistan, Taliban Hints It Will Attack Relief Workers


The Pakistani Taliban called the attendance of overseas relief workers in this flood-ravaged country “intolerable” on Thursday and obliquely optional that militants could carry out attacks against members of aid groups, according to news reports.

A spokesman for the United Nations dismissed the threats, saying that safety concern had not exaggerated its aid work thus far. Still, any aggression would add more strain to relief labors that have been slow to reach the millions of Pakistanis pull up by the worst flooding in the country’s history.

The United Nations orator, Maurizio Giuliano, said relief workers would carry on their efforts and that the group would not be frightened by “threats of insecurity, let alone rumors of such threats.”
