A survey of truck drivers has found an alarming number who report feeling very drowsy behind the wheel, and even those who admit they "regularly fell asleep''.
The Victorian study saw almost 4000 drivers go through a health check, a process that was secret to ensure they could be honest.
It found 19 per cent of the drivers reported feeling "excessive sleepiness'' while driving on the nation's highways, including four per cent who admitted them "frequently fell asleep''.
The research was led by Mark Howard, a respiratory and sleep physician at Melbourne's Austin Hospital and director of the institution of Breathing and Sleep.
The drivers who reported falling asleep behind the wheel were doing so about one in every 10 trips, Dr Howard said today.
"I've heard drivers, that we were seeing clinically as patients, saying it has happened on and off for years before they actually had a collapse,'' Dr Howard said.
"So it's a risk factor rather than every time you fall asleep you have a crash but, clearly, it's not good.
