Men jailed over aviary attack

Birds_attackTwo South Canterbury men have been jailed for killing more than 30 birds at a Temuka birdhouse earlier this year.

Jonathan Ramon Douglas Fleming, 22, and Simiona Paul John, 27, who had earlier pleaded guilty to breaking into the Temuka Aviary and wilfully ill-treating the birds, were sentenced in Timaru District Court on Wednesday.

Fleming was sentenced to 26 months in jail, with John receiving a 12 month sentence, the Timaru Herald reported.

The August attack left 32 exotic birds, including cockatoos, parrots, canaries and rainbow lorikeets, with heads and feathers ripped off.

Just after the attack Timaru Bird Club vice-president Pat Rule estimated the slaughtered birds to be worth around $4000.
