More than 120 beached whales have died in 2 separate incidents in New Zealand, officials have said.

21 pilot whales that were beached on the North Island of New Zealand have been buried. Around 40 other whales in the pod were helped back out to sea by volunteers and government conservation workers in the weekend.

A separate pod of 105 long-finned pilot whales died after being marooned in a nature reserve on the South Island.

Huge numbers of whales become stranded on New Zealand's beaches every summer as they pass over on their way to breeding grounds from Antarctic waters.
