SAN DIEGO - A 17-year-old Mexican youth has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was shot repetitively east of San Diego last year.

Christian Daniel Castro Alvarez sat silently with his head down during Thursday's sentencing in San Diego federal court.

The courtroom was crowded with uniformed Border Patrol agents as the judge read a letter written by the defendant apologizing to the family of slain agent Robert Rosas.

Robert Rosas was shot several times in the head, from behind and while lying on the ground. Castro's attorney argued that 2 accomplices now in Mexico fired the fatal shots.

Castro, who had held Robert Rosas at gunpoint, has told authorities the killing happened during an attempted robbery he was enforced to commit under threat of death.
