A scientist from the University of Queensland used time lapse photography to capture the footage. Coral might appear solid and inanimate, but unexpected new footage of a mushroom coral inflating itself to flee a sandy burial has brought the living being to life.
Unlike many of the more well-known branching and staghorn-type corals, mushroom corals have a comparatively broad layer of fleshy tissue on top of their tough calcium carbonate outline. To find out how mushroom corals a predominantly mobile family of corals did this, the researcher brought specimens into the lab and put them in aquaria in order to film the process.
