A study of researchers proves that the risk of birth defects increases four-fold if the pregnant mother has diabetes. There is concern that increasing levels of diabetes, particularly Type 2, could make the matter worse. The risk of problems can be reduced by taking additional care to have the best possible glucose control before becoming pregnant.
According to The lead researcher, Dr Ruth Bell from Newcastle University, numerous of these anomalies occur in the first four to six weeks and the number of pregnancies with poor sugar control was more than we would resemble. The danger of origin defects went from 19 in each 1,000 births for women with no pre-existing diabetes to 72 in every 1,000 births for women with diabetes.
