Argentina – Argentina's last dictator Reynaldo Bignone has been convicted of human rights abuses and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
A tribunal has ruled that Reynaldo Bignone shared co-responsibility in 56 cases of torture, break-ins and illegal detentions in one of Argentina's largest torture centers, the Campo de Mayo military base, in the nation's 1976-1983 dictatorship.
Tuesday's verdict marked the first time the 82-year-old former dictator has been convicted for human rights abuses.
Reynaldo Bignone was de facto president from 1982 to 1983, but the crimes he was convicted of were committed between 1976 and 1978, at that time he was second-in-command of the Campo Mayo military base.
