RALEIGH, N.C. - The man accused of assassination a University of North Carolina student body president found shot to death in the middle of a street 2 years ago pleaded guilty Monday to federal crimes, avoiding the death penalty.
Demario Atwater, 23, pleaded culpable to several charges, including carjacking resulting in death and kidnapping. Prosecutors agreed to drop their plan to pursue the death penalty and Demario Atwater agreed to a life sentence.

Eve Carson, 22, of Athens, Ga., was found shot to death in a Chapel Hill neighborhood in March 2008 in March 2008. She had been shot 5 times, including once in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun.
Authorities say Eve Carson was killed after watching as 100s of dollars were withdrawn from her bank account at several ATMs.
Demario Atwater still faces charges in state court along with Laurence Lovette, who was just 17 at the time of the killing and he is ineligible for the death penalty.
