Terrorist news: U.S. government papers obtained throughout the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and newly posted on the website of the George Washington University National Security Archive shed some extra light on talks with the Taliban prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, as well as with regard to the frequent Taliban offers to hand over Osama bin Laden, and the role of Pakistan previous to and after the attacks.
One of the newly released State Department papers, from March 2000, notes that a planned “gas pipeline from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Multan, Pakistan figured importantly in discussions” about the mutual goal flanked by the U.S.
