Barack Obama has called on assembly to approve major upgrade to the nation's roads, rail lines and runway - part of a six-year plan that would cost tens of billions of dollars and create a government-run bank to money ground-breaking convey projects.
With Democrats opposite an increasingly bleak mid-term election season, Mr Obama used a Labor Day speech to outline his $US50 billion ($54.8 billion) plan to rouse a sluggish financial system and create jobs.
Mr Obama said the plan would put building workers back on the job and rebuild deteriorating communications.
