First-timers set to control ARIAs

First-time nominees are set to control this year's ARIA Awards, with rising local stars Jessica Mauboy and Empire of the Sun leading the charge.

Former Australian Idol competitor Mauboy has scored the most nominations for the annual music awards, thanks to her debut album Been Waiting.

She is in the running for seven gongs, just one ahead of Empire of the Sun duo Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, who have been chosen for their first offering, walking on a Dream.

It's the first time Mauboy has been been chosen for an ARIA award.

And although Steele and Littlemore were contenders with their previous outfits The Sleepy Jackson and Pnau, this is their first time with Empire of the Sun, which they formed in 2007.

They join a host of other newcomers including Ladyhawke, The Temper Trap, C.W. Stoneking and Mauboy's fellow Idol alumnus Lisa Mitchell, who are all up for awards at the event to be held at Sydney's Acer Arena on November 26.
