Pilot of fated Kokoda plane called in sick

The pilot of a plane which collapsed near the Kokoda Track last month, killing all on board, had called in sick the evening before flying.

Jannie Moala, 26, rang Airlines PNG operation centre at 6pm on August 10 and said she was feeling ill and might not be able to fly the plane the next morning, The Age newspaper reports.

A spokeswoman for Airlines PNG confirmed Ms Moala rang in sick but without any suggestion she was pressured to fly.

Ms Moala rang flight operations back about 10pm the same night and said she was "feeling well and was fit and happy to operate the flight", the spokeswoman said.

"At no time did operations pre-emptively ring Jannie, nor was there any idea that there was any pressure on her to operate the flight," the spokeswoman told the newspaper.
