An elderly motorist faces drink-driving charges following the death of a cyclist near Otaki on Friday.
Frank van Kampen, 46, from Otaki, died after being hit from behind while riding north towards Te Horo on State Highway 1 about 5pm.
Sergeant Noel Bigwood said van Kampen appeared to have been riding in the cycling lane when struck by the Mazda stationwagon travelling in the same direction.
The 70-year-old female driver of the car failed an evidential breath test and will appear in court once the investigation over the incident is complete, Bigwood said.
Her licence was immediately suspended.
