Aggravation repeal bill passes first reading


The government's bill to eliminate the partial defence of provocation approved its first reading on a unanibeehive_parlmous vote in parliament.

The Law Commission has twice suggested elimination, first in 2001 and again in 2007.

The partial defence was under strong debate after Otago University tutor Clayton Weatherston argued he was aggravated into stabbing girlfriend Sophie Elliott 216 times.

Weatherston pleaded guilty to manslaughter but the jury found him culpable of murder.
