An Ethiopian Airlines flight boarded with 90 people caught fire and crashed into the Mediterranean sea minutes after taking off from Beirut early Monday, setting off a frantic search as rain lashed the coast and debris washed ashore. At least 23 bodies were recovered. Ethiopian Airlines officials have said that there were 82 passengers and 8 crew on board. The grounds of the crash were not immediately known. But Lebanon has seen having stormy weather since Sunday night, with crackling thunder, lightning and splashing rain.
A Foreign Officer said one British national citizen and one with dual nationality were on board in Flight ET409. At least 21 bodies have been recovered from the shores and there has been no hint about anyone escaping the crash.
An RAF helicopter, based in Cyprus, has been helping the Lebanese authorities in rescue and recovery operations. The reason for the crash is being examined, but police is not considering terrorism as a reason for the crash.
