Search for Twin of Earth

http://www.news-updations.blogspot.com/One of the world's most important astronomers has envisioned that scientists will be able to detect the first strictly Earth-like planet outside the solar system by this year end. Professor Michel Mayor, of Geneva University, who guided the team that discovered the first extra solar planet in 1995, has said that he was confident that a planet which is similar to Earth in size and composition would be found in the near future. The search for a planet which is similar to Earth is motivated by the eventual prospect of finding places with favorable conditions for the survival of life.

The spectacular technological progress over the last 15 years had led to the start of new phase in this search. This resulted in the discovery of more than 400 extra solar planets orbiting stars similar to that of the Sun. So far the planets which have been discovered are too large. Very large planets are expected to have very active tectonic plates, which results in highly disordered environment. The next Condition for a planet to be favorable for survival of life is that it orbits its star at such a distance that its water would be liquid.

Kepler spacecraft, sent by NASA which is carrying the biggest telescope that is sent beyond the Earth's orbit, will be the first to find a planet that meets both these criteria.
