Three bombs exploded outside of major hotels in Baghdad on Monday, deep coordinated attacks on government buildings in October and December with the plan of killed hundreds at this point and stirred worries of growing violence as Iraq heads in the way of national elections March 7th.
The hotels, including one special by Western press, were cipher of a returning normalcy in Baghdad, where violence remains downward from two years ago. Reuters reported that 36 people had been killed, and scores were wounded, but the death toll was possible to change.
The three bombs exploded approximately 10 minutes apart during afternoon rush hour. The three hotels strikes were the Palestine at 3:28 pm, followed moments later by the Babylon and the Hamra. The blasts shook the city and devastated windows for miles around. Iraqis in nearby areas took in the direction of the streets, wailing at the black clouds of smoke.
The bombers had to go by from side to side security checkpoints at all three hotels. At the Hamra, a day laborer who gave his name as Abu Haider said he saw a car exchange gunshots at the checkpoint, then watched a next car speed through. “It was just seconds before the explosion,” he said.
