Former foreign secretary Shivshankar Menon was chosen as the new National Security Adviser (NSA) on Thursday. Menon, of age 60, will be in the rank of minister of state. He is expected to focus on the troubles of diplomatic commitments more willingly than be involved in operational intelligence management. As the new NSA is more interested in tactical feature of foreign policy, the Prime Minister's Office is likely to impel the ministry of external affairs more strongly than before.

Mr.Menon has a very good experience having served as ambassador to China, Pakistan, Israel and Sri Lanka. He also played a key role along with Narayanan in achieving the India-US nuclear deal, which made the country to take part in global nuclear arena.

This shift in prominence has been demanded after Home Minister P Chidambaram revealed a sequence of events for restoring the country's internal security design last month. A large amount of the managerial role for intelligence will not be in the control of new NSA and also the internal security management, will shift to the home ministry.
