The world's largest squid class has developed enormous eyes to give early warning of approaching sperm whales. Four years ago in New Zealand, Lead scientist Dan Nilsson from Lund University in Sweden was present at the unique dissection of a massive squid performed. The colossal squid particularly is ready with a fearsome arsenal of weapons, as well as barbed swiveling hooks.
Prof Nilsson's team used mathematical models of how different sizes of eye perform at depths up to 1km. Predation by large, notched whales has driven the progression of gigantism in the eyes of these squid. Scars on the bodies of sperm whales point to that the two creatures frequently do clash, whereas massive squid beaks found in the stomachs of sperm whales indicate that the latter often win.
