The coupling of Jupiter and Venus in the sky is set to reach its closest point in the coming days. Venus is the brighter of the two, and Jupiter will appear to move in a line past it for the rest of the month. The pair can be seen to the west-southwest, soon later than sundown.
This is a lively period for planet-watchers. Previous Monday, Mars made its nearby approach to ground in more than two years. The mainly predictable planetary incident for 2012 will be the transportation of Venus in early June, at what time it will appear on or after some locations on Earth to pass in facade of the Sun.
