MOGADISHU, Somalia – A fitness worker and residents say 8 people have been killed as mortars pounded the Somali capital for the duration of an attack on government soldiers by an radical Islamic group.The fitness worker says a mortar landed on a minivan, killing 5 people inside, including a 6-year old boy. Ali Muse of Mogadishu's ambulance service says 17 other people were injured in Friday's fighting. In southern and northern Mogadishu, residents reported 3 people were killed.
100 of residents, who thinking a much-talked about government offensive against al-Shabab had begin, fled in mini vans, on donkey carts or pushing wheelbarrows carrying their household goods. Others immediately walked. Somalia has not had an effective government for 19 years.
