SWISS SKIER Michael Schmid earned his very first Olympic gold medal today, winning the men's Ski cross competition and consolidating his previous claim of top qualifier. He had won all 4 man races in the new sport.
Michael Schmid beat 3 other riders as he led the majority of the way. Austrian Andreas Matt was in the 2nd position, whereas Norway skier Audun Groenvold took the bronze medal in the event.
The Canadian entry to the ski cross final, Christopher Delbosco came 4th. The Canadian had crashed on his second to last jump and was not capable to finish the event. This crash again pointed out the level of safety at the Vancouver Olympics venue Cypress Mountain. There have been 7 crashes in the 16 events that have taken place here.
Ski Cross made its first appearance as an Olympic event this year, at the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010. The event is a freestyle skiing version of the snowboard cross.
