Darfur combating displaces 1000s unaimed

KHARTOUM – Recent fighting among Sudanese troops and rebels in the western area of Darfur has killed lots of people and displaced 1000s more, UN and African peacekeepers said on Tuesday.

"The clashes more than the past few days have left many dead and injured 1000s to flee their homes," the statement said. Fighting pitted pro-government forces & combatants from the Sudan Liberation Army of Abdelwahid Nur -- one of two major rebel groups, in Jebel Marra, according to different reports.

The fighting mandatory the French aid group Medecins du Monde to evacuate a dozen of its expatriate workers, the organization said. Armed confrontation also erupted in Jebel Moon, one more rebel stronghold near the border with Chad.

The United Nations told up to 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million fled their homes since the ethnic minority rebels in Darfur 1st raised up against the Arab-dominated Sudan government in February 2003. Khartoum told 10,000 people have been killed.
