KABUL, Afghanistan, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Avalanches in an region north of Kabul killed at least 2 dozen people with buried about 2 miles of road in snow, the Defense Ministry said Tuesday. The Afghan govt said it deployed 500 soldiers to Salang Pass, a high-altitude road that goes into the mountains.
The avalanches occurred Monday plus Tuesday. Afghan Interior Minister Mohammed Hanif Atmar said 24 natives were confirmed dead and another 40 natives were missing and feared dead. He said 128 injured natives were evacuated to hospitals.
Travelers were trapped in their vehicles on each side of the pass, IRIN reported. NATO-led International Security Assistance Force dispatched 2 helicopters to help evacuate natives and airdrop food, Afghanistan officials said. The Public Health department said ambulances and dozens of health staff had been sent to the view.
