Mislaid Wellington schoolgirl Olivia Rutherford may be with friends who are hiding her, police say. Yesterday police described her state of mind as "fragile and upset". Olivia, 15, did not attend school on Friday – somewhat both her mother and school principal say she has not at all done before.
Police are too looking for a woman who called to excuse Olivia's absence from school on Friday morning. The caller was not her mother, Elizabeth Rutherford. "We'll be inspection it out to see who's really left it and how that message came to be," Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell said.
A police dive squad failed to get back anything from Wellington harbour yesterday. Olivia's bag, with her wallet, was found on the City to Sea Bridge near the harbor by a member of the public on Saturday morning.
"Youngsters can be emotional and we think that she's been weak and upset on Friday. Olivia's friends may be thinking they are doing the correct thing by keeping her with them but we need to know if she's safe." No exacting information had led police to believe Olivia was hiding with friends. "It's just an option and we know from experience and recent cases… teenagers will look after their friends."
