It was another great day for the United States at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics yesterday, after Evan Lysacek became the 1st American to win the Olympic men’s figure skating title since 1988. And with him winning gold, he helped the United States extend their lead in the medals standings.

24-year old Evan Lysacek managed to move past defending champion Evgeni Plushenko(Russia), in the free skate part of the competition. He is now the first United States male figure skater to win a gold medal, as Brian Boitano won gold 22 years ago in Calgary.

Thanks to Evan Lysacek’s victory in the men’s figure skating, the Unites States is now on a total of 18 medals in just 6 days of Olympic competition. That is in fact 7 more medals than Germany, who is 2nd in the medals standings. The United States has also got a Winter Games-best, with 6 gold medals.

Evan Lysacek managed to score a career high 257.67 points in the event, to prevent Evgeni Plushenko from joining Dick Button of the U.S. as the only 2-time Olympic men’s figure skating gold medalists. 3-time world champion Evgeni Plushenko, took silver with 256.36 points.
