The Cook Islands experienced "unbelievable" destruction in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Pat, aid workers say.
About 50 air force & military personnel left the Cook Islands on Monday later than a 2-week operation to give disaster relief in the wake of the cyclone, which struck the small atoll of Aitutaki above a fortnight ago.
Air force Flight Lieutenant Matt Walls told the devastation on Aitutaki seemed "incredible" when he 1st landed. "Debris strewn all through the island, houses completely destroyed, most by their roofs & walls gone," he said.
An air force C130 Hercules distributed about 40 tonnes of aid, with a water purification plant, 2 diggers, emergency shelters tents, food, blankets & electrical wiring. "The Cook Islands govt has previously begun work on the long-term improvement plan, so it all bodes well," he told.
