VETERAN speed boat racer Neil Coddington was killed the past morning after he was flung from a boat he was driving at speedy on Somerset Dam near Esk. The 57-year-old’s family and friends watched in shock as onlookers tried badly to save his life after they plucked him insensible from the dam.
His friends said the Brisbane man was a regular visitor to the popular water hole. They said he went to a part at the dam known as The Spit, where he tested his hydroplane named Blue Max, a speedboat designed for high speeds and racing.
Witness Jason Perkins said he was in his boat when he saw the mishap and rushed to the man’s aid. “It was terrible. He was coming downward at nearly 150kmh and all of an unexpected the boat did a hard left-hand turn,” Mr Perkins said
“He just got spat out of the boat and cart-wheeled across the water.” A boat expert said it was routine for hydroplanes to achieve speeds up to 200kmh. Mr Perkins said he and six other people rushed to the man’s aid about 8.45am. “Striking the water at that speed is like hitting concrete. There is no speed limit at The Spit. Maritime Safety Queensland and police are investigating.
