Armed police blocked roads and warned public to stay inside as a gunman walked Upper Hutt streets. Police said a man spoiled a van, made threats and was seen waving a rifle at a Sanford St home about 4.45pm yesterday. Two eye witnesses at the home fled. The equipped offenders squad, armed police and police dogs were used to look for the gunman.
People around Upper Hutt College and Fergusson Intermediate, in the Fergusson Dr, Moonshine Rd and Merton St area, were told to keep on inside and people trying to get home were asked to wait away. The gunman walked about 250 meters from the home to the grounds, where he surplus the rifle. At 5.30pm, police under arrest a man near the school grounds. An unloaded rifle was found nearby.
During the callout, police got one more report of a man with a rifle at a close to address in Hikurangi St. As a precaution, police treated it as a next incident but believe it was the same man. They cordoned off the street and the AOS were deployed to guarantee the area was safe. Chris Fairbrother was stopped up by the cordons but saw police dogs track a man on the school grounds. “I can notice the dogs chasing someone. They were on his track."
