A blast in the Iraqi city of Karbala has killed at least 20 Shia pilgrims as they travelled to a holy festival. More than a 100 people were wounded in what’s described as a suicide bomb attack south of Baghdad. The pilgrims were arriving in large numbers to stay a vital shrine for Shia Muslims. Officials say a bike towing a farm cart loaded with explosives rode into the crowd on the outskirts of Karbala.
It is the latest and mainly serious in a series of attacks targeting pilgrims, and comes despite strong security actions to try to counter sectarian cruelty. In western Baghdad another bomb assault killed 1 person and injured 2 others. On Monday 41 public were killed and more than a 100 injured by a female suicide bomber in north-east Baghdad.
The Iraqi prime minister answerable that attack on the barred Baath party of the former leader Saddam Hussein. An upsurge in cruelty is feared ahead of parliamentary elections next month.
